The new tool for the prevention and management of risk by biomechanical overload for the upper limbs

In recent years, the trend of continuous increase in problems related to the appearance of disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, has determined the need for a design of spaces, tools and production processes that can not disregard the ergonomic approach and capabilities worker specifications.

Italian law identifies the biomechanical overload of the musculoskeletal system as an important risk factor for the onset of disorders or occupational diseases and aims to identify suitable tools to eliminate or minimize this risk.

The biomechanical overload today represents the prevailing risk between occupational risks, which consequently determines that musculoskeletal diseases appear first among occupational diseases.

National and international regulations (CEN and ISO standards) underline the need to proceed with the assessment of biomechanical overload risk and propose methods for assessing risks.
Their application, involving complex calculations, requires the use of IT supports. The evaluation methods referred to in the Standards are:

  • the OCRA method (for repetitive movements)
  • the NIOSH method (for the manual handling of loads) and evaluation methods of transport, lifting and carrying
  • the MAPO method (for manual patient handling)

Lema Informatica: risk mapping tools

Lema Informatica wanted to create a suite of programs that allows a new global management of the biomechanical overload risk. In fact, it did not limit itself to creating computational supports capable of assessing the risk present at a given location (merely by applying one of the methods indicated), but has developed risk mapping tools capable of allowing it to be managed. This means to get:

  • the estimation of the effects of the turnover

  • redesign simulations

  • automatic sending of risk assessment data in health records

  • management of pathological subjects (reintegration of operators, etc.)
